Finnish Star - Tutorial

This tutorial is especially for a lady that I met a week past Saturday at The Papeterie while doing GJWTHF. It's far easier to put together than it looks...

you will need:
1 sheet 12x12 (30x30cm) paper - double-sided patterned paper works perfectly.
adhesive
scissors and paper trimmer/guillotine
paperclips or small pegs to hold pieces together while the adhesive dries
1. Cut the sheet of paper into 12 1" wide strips
2. Lay 1 strip over another strip, exactly centred. Glue in place

3. Glue another strip on either side of the vertical strip - ensure that the vertical strip is under the horizontal strip, and the 2 new strips are glued over the horizontal strip. It is important that the strips are evenly spaced and all ends are even.

4. Weave 2 more strips - either side of the horizontal strip. These strips cross over the 1st and 3rd strip and are under the middle strip

When all strips are in place, this is what it should look like in the middle.

5. Turn the top right vertical strip to the back so that the backside of it is facing you. At the same time, turn the top right horizontal strip also towards the vertical strip and glue its backside to the backside of the horizontal strip. The picture below explains better..

6. repeat for the other 3 corners and it should look like this...
This is now the 1st half of your star complete.
7. repeat steps 1-6 for the remaining 6 strips
8. place one half star on top of the other with the curved points to the inside like this...so that each of the loops is laying on a strip from the other half star.

9. Lay each strip from one star half inside the curved loop from the other star half. Pull the strip up far enough so that the corner point of the loop  touches the straight line of the strip and glue in place. see pics below...

10. Once all of the strips are glued on, this is how the star looks....
11. Once the glue is dried you can trim the points of the strips to match the points of the loops, and your finished star will look like this (punch a hole on one of the loops and use thread/cord to make a hanging loop)
You can either leave your star like this - or decorate it further for example by adding a stamped image to the centre, or punched snowflakes etc

If you give this tutorial a try, remember to come back and leave me a link to your creation, I love to see what other people do with it.

Have made a star following your tutorial Debbi. My family don't often make a comment about my projects unless I shove them under their noses but my daughter noticed this one and loved it.
Thanks for the inspiration.
