Back in the saddle

Hi everyone,

Learning to live in Lockdown

Lockdown 2020 has thrown up a lot of challenges for pretty much everyone across the globe. For me, this has meant adjusting to working from home which has taken a bit of time to get used to, and to get into a workable work/life balance.

I very quickly realised that I missed my daily commute. I’ve always said that this is my “thinking time”. On the way to work it’s my time to think about what my plan for work is, what else I need to do during the day, it’s also the time where I can call doctor/school/dentist etc to make appointments or whatever. On the way home it’s my time to process my workday, think about what I have to do in the evening as well as whatever else is going on in the life of my family. It’s the time where I speak to people only if I choose to, and I don’t hear “mum, where’s …” , “mum, can you….” “mummmmmmm”.

I also came to the realisation that this is also my winding down time, where I can switch off working Deb, and turn on home Mum, so without this commute, I found it very hard to switch off from work, it would carry on into the evenings and weekends so that I didn’t feel like I was doing anything else but work.
But once I did realise this, I made a conscious effort to “leave work” one Friday night and spent the whole weekend relaxing, just chilling out without looking at work email or checking the work social media channels or messages. And I think I needed it, the creative juices started flowing again and I got back into the greenhouse, pottering around with seeds and tiny plants.
So I started managing my weeks a bit better, setting aside set working hours and then remembering to walk away from it when my work day was done. Sometimes it’s still a wee bit of a struggle, I was answering social media enquiries at 11.30pm the other night, but on the whole I think I’ve got it more or less sussed.

Rediscovering my craft

As most of you know, I love to colour, but because I have a creative job that’s pretty all-consuming it’s been a long time since I’ve had the time or motivation to do any colouring. I rarely make cards, not even for fun, if I have to make a card for any reason it’s usually last minute and very quick ‘n’ easy.

So when Krista Smith announced she would be having a Colouring Challenge from the 1st to 5th June, it really ignited something – I know how corny that sounds but it’s true. I was excited about it!
So I printed off some of Krista’s Digi stamps and after such a long time sat down to colour again.

I’m surprised no bats or moths flew out when I opened my case of promarkers and flexmarkers. But it was like I’d never been away from them, it really is like riding a bike!
Sadly though, the more I coloured, the more of my markers I found to have dried out and I had to admit to myself that their days were numbered.

Some of you may know that I used to be Product Coach for Scotland for Letraset – the company that created and made Promarkers, Flexmarkers and Tria Markers. The directors of Letraset sold the company to a company called ColArt who also own brands like Winsor & Newton, Elephant Art and Snazaroo. Unfortunately, they decided to integrate the Promarkers into the Winsor & Newton brand and completely ditched the Tria and Flexmarker ranges, rebranding the Promarkers and launching their own Brushmarkers.
Letraset worked closely and took on board feedback from the craft community as well as the more traditional art community. ColArt/Winsor & Newton don’t seem to have the same interest (in my opinion) and don’t seem to put any effort into the craft market.
So because of this, I decided that I need to find a replacement range of markers…..

thanks for visiting,
it's always nice to hear what you think so feel free to leave me a comment

Another catch up post for you, this time it's my Promarker/Flexmarker workshop from the other week at The Papeterie....
First up was a Beginners promarker/flexmarker class - we coloured a few different images: a character stamp, a floral stamp and a teddy bear stamp. This was to give the class a feel for various different applications, how to blend and add texture.....

DJ Luv

I've been really really lucky lately, some of you may have noticed that I was one of the runner-up winners on Krista's Saturated Canary Pinterest Competition - I'm so honoured that Krista chose my ideda along with Angela's to come up with this pair that she called DJ Luv, they'll be available to buy as a pair on Friday 11th January over at her shop, but we got a copy first so I just had to colour them up as soon as Krista sent them. Angela's inspiration board featured the female dj character and I (of course) went with the teenage boy character - you all know how I'm constantly on the search for boy stamps :)
I used a combination of flexmarkers and promarkers:
skin: Burnt Orange, Coral, Sunkissed Pink and Blush.
blue hair: Indigo Blue, Azure, Sky Blue, Stonewash
brown hair: Saddle Brown, Auburn, Nutmeg, Light Fawn
girl's clothes: Lush Green, Green, Mint Green, Pastel Green, Vermillion, Shocking Pink, Frosted Pink

Boys Will Be Boys

Shock Horror!! I managed to get a bit of colouring done this year already - and this is the first chance I've had to play with the new flexmarkers that were released at the end of 2012.
I've also used a very apt rub-on from one of the packs of Letraset Wordset Transfers which are at special clearance prices.

Image: Boys Will Be Boys digi stamp from Sugar Nellie, coloured with promarkers and flexmarkers (see below next pic for colours)
papers are all Making Memories - Just Chillin Boy
Letraset Transfers - For Men (black)

I've used a very simple style of colouring, because I think it suits the image.
I've used my usual skin combo of Burnt Orange, Coral, Sunkissed Pink and Blush promarkers thenSoft Green promarker for the lighter strips of his jumper and Verdigris flexmarker for shading, Pesto and Herb Green flexmarkers for the other stripes. I used Cadet Blue, Celestial Blue and Stonewash flexmarkers for his trousers, Chilli Red and Red Rooster flexmarkers for his tongue, Burnt Umber promarker and Burnt Sienna flexmarker for his hair and Caribbean Blue flexmarker to outline everything.

For the first time in ages I have a baby card to make, Faithy's best friend at school got a new baby brother just before Christmas, so I need to get cracking with a card and finish off the crocheted blanket I'm making before Friday as we're popping over to meet him. In fact it's been quite a while since I've had a baby bosie, let's hope it's not catching lol

Charts :)

So do you all know about the new Flexmarker colours that Letraset released at the end of 2012? Letraset have expanded the flexmarker range so that it now totals 148 - they've released a lot of colours that have only previously been available as promarkers, so you have a choice depending on personal preference. But there are also 17 brand new colours, some gorgeous new reds, subtle blues, a much needed pink and some zingy purples to mention just a few.
And you know me, I like to play around with colour charts - Letraset already provide downloadable charts for flexmarkers and for promarkers, but for those of us who have both and want them all on the one chart.... I've combined them in a chart that you can download, print and colour yourself.
So here's the link to the post on Wiccababe's Tutorials for all my current charts, there's the one I've been talking about, as well as one for Aquamarkers and a blending suggestion chart for the limited edition 2012 promarkers too.

Christmas Cards

Oh My Goodness, where has December gone?
The kids break up on Friday for the holidays, and thankfully I've not got much left to do/buy/organise/wrap etc, just need to have the big clean and keep the washing up to date and hopefully we're all set.
I'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that I won't be sending Christmas Cards this year, all the ones I've made are pretty much on display at The Papeterie, and I've been so busy with other work that I haven't had any time to make some. I also feel it would be a bit of a cop out if I sent shop-bought cards, so this year I've decided to make a donation in lieu to Mrs Murray's Cat & Dog Home in Aberdeen.
But I did have a couple of commissions to make for one of the other mums at school, giving you a wee bloggy wave Lindsay :)
She wanted me to make cards for her 2 best friends and their families, so here's the first one...
The tag is removable (see bottom photo), here's a better pic to show all the glamour dust...

This pic shows the greeting tag removed...

Materials list:
Henry in Christmas Bauble digi stamp from Whiff of Joy
printed onto Diamond White cardstock from The Papeterie
Coloured with Promarkers: Umber, Burgundy, Crimson, Cardinal Red, Burnt Orange, Coral, Sunkissed Pink and Flexmarkers: Amaranth Red, Blue Grey 4, 3, 2, 1
Kraft tag diecut using Tim Holtz Tag & Tie Alterations die and stamped with Hero Arts CL630 Miracle of the Holidays stamp set
red lacquer and white cardstock from The Papeterie
White cardstock embossed with Spellbinders Holiday Magic M-Bossabilities folder
red satin ribbon, snowflakes punched from glitter paper with Martha Stewart snowflake punch, adhesive gemstones

Right, I'd better get on with my online shop for this week, need to get some goodies for the kids christmas parties. Back soon with the other card commission :)
